v0.3
First things first: name change! I've been agonizing over the name of this game for weeks on end now, and I am relieved to say that I have finally settled on something I like: Roll or Nothing. It sounds fun, it's easy to spell, it's easy to say, it implies stakes and it has 'roll' in the title. It's perfect. Shut up, I'm refuse to punish myself any more over this!
Secondly: I've been working diligently on an update to this game for the last two months. It started with a massive refactor of the game's components which is of no benefit to the player but of massive benefit to myself if I continue to work on this project. This involved ripping out all the quick and dirty game jam code and organizing things in a clean, understandable way.
Here are some changes I made to the game that you would notice, had you played it before:
- The game can now be played at any resolution! That's right, previously it was locked to a specific size because that was the size the UI worked at. Now the UI will scale nicely to fit any resolution, which means you can download the game and full screen it! (ALT + ENTER)
- I have done a massive rework of the items. Gone are the old 2D pixel icons, replaced by shiny new 3D models. I wasn't too sure what to make them (previously they were poker chips) but I figured you roll dice on your table at home, what if they were all just knick-knacks or doohickeys that could be found around the house? Some of them have functionality from the previous items, but a lot of them have brand spanking new abilities too!
- I did a bunch of work on improving the actual dice rolling itself. A lot of this was sound design to make the dice feel good to roll (sound is so important!) but I also did work on the actual physics of the dice to prevent random jiggle or dice getting stuck. I experimented briefly with actually rolling the dice with the mouse cursor, but discovered very quickly that this was too finicky and abandoned the idea.
- The game is now won after beating 13 rounds, instead of 12, like it was previously. This is just a small balancing change to increase the challenge ever so slightly.
- A whole host of small fixes and quality of life improvements that are too many to list here.
That's it! I hope you enjoy the changes. I have a lot more planned that I will include in future updates, so stay tuned!
